Farmer's Market Saturday in Wolfville

One of our favorite things to do on Saturday mornings is to visit the Wolfville Farmer’s Market. Even in the icy cold of February, it’s the best place to be in Wolfville on Saturday morning. It’s a guarantee we’ll see friends among the coffee drinkers - especially if I’m rocking a grubby Saturday morning sans mascara look.

It’s cold out there.

It’s cold out there.

We had a snow, ice and wind storm here yesterday and last night, which caused some local power outages and very icy roads this morning, but we managed to make it in without busting our bums. The crowd was a little smaller and a few vendors appeared to be missing but the market was still buzzing with people. And yes, it’s an indoor market - at least in the winter!

While the winter vegetable selection is mostly limited to root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, turnips, and all kinds of potatoes, several greenhouse growers offer fresh local greens.

Local farms offer organic meats and you can even buy organic meat scraps for your dog. Plus you can find local fish at the fish vendor’s stand.

Local restaurants and caterers offer breakfast and lunch options and the market focuses on reducing waste with reusable dishes, coffee mugs and utensils. It’s a very earth friendly place. Fresh breads are available from local bakeries and one reason we usually go is so Don can get his freshly baked pretzel from the German Bakery and Sachsen Café.

One of our friends who visited us last fall remarked that the Wolfville Farmer’s Market was a “wine tasting with vegetables.” Along with choosing your veggies and local meats for the week, you can taste the wines of the Valley, as well as rum, vodka and beers from local distilleries. This week, you could sample chocolate wine at the Planter’s Ridge stand.

This week, we came home with leeks, turnips and rainbow carrots from Longspell Farms plus a local chipotle mayo that I love from El Gallo Mexican. And, of course, a pretzel for Don.
